The men’s T20 World Cup of 2021 is set to begin on October 17 in the UAE. Also, the final of the 16-team tournament is scheduled for November 14. The tournament will begin days after the final of IPL, which is most likely to be conducted on October 15. BCCI has still not written to ICC for officially shifting the T20 World Cup to the venues of UAE, but the planning for conducting the tournament in the middle east is already set. According to the current plan, the initial T20 world Cup round will be split between two groups and will be played in Oman and UAE.
In the first round, there will be 12 matches and will include eight teams, out of which four from each side will qualify for the Super 12s. Out of these eight teams- Bangladesh, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Oman, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, and Namibia, only four teams will be joining the top eight ranked teams of T20I. The Super 12s phase, including 30 matches, is scheduled to begin on October 24. In the Super 12s, the teams will split into two groups of six teams. It will be conducted at three venues in the UAE, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah. It will follow three playoff games that are two semi-finals and one final.
ICC Deadline for BCCI
Round 1 will be co-hosted by any one of the venues in Oman and UAE. BCCI is confident that this will offer sufficient time to refresh the pitches of the main grounds in the UAE for playing super 12s. The ICC granted BCCI to give its final decision on whether India will host the T20 World cup or not on June 1. With the surge in the Covid-19 pandemic, ICC earlier postponed the 2020 World Cup that was originally planned to be held in Australia. After that, India decided to host the 2021 tournament, with Australia hosting the edition of 2022.
However, the critical pandemic situation has forced the BCCI to suspend IPL in the middle stage and created doubts on whether it will host the multiple teams’ World T20 or not. The BCCI shortlisted few venues for the T20 World Cup, but a team from ICC was meant to insect the venues. However, the visit was canceled in April. ICC deadline will be expiring in some days, and BCCI is anticipated to provide its final words on shifting the event outside to the UAE.
