Zhang Yufei wrapped the Chinese flag while beaming with joy after she set won gold in the Olympics in the 200m butterfly on July 29. Within half an hour, the 23-year old grabbed a second gold medal for China in the 4x200m freestyle relay team by beating Australia and United States. She said that before the 200m butterfly, she wanted the medal but was nervous about it. Her coach told her that she does not have to think a lot and she will remain the champion. Before the race, her coach also said that her performance might even exceed her expectations and create a record. While hearing this, she thought her coach was joking.
Zhang, who became the runner-up to Margaret MacNeil of Canada in the 100m, reached the wall in just 2:03.86 in the 200m butterfly. She was way ahead of the pair Hali Flickinger and Regan Smith of the US and won the first swimming event gold for China in the Olympic Games.
Success of Zhang
After the win, she waved her hands and cheered with teary eyes. She beamed at her teammates after leaving the pool as they were chanting her name. China’s butterfly queen Xuzhou-born Zhang is a rising star of the country emerging from the World and Olympic champion Sun Yang’s shadows. Yang has been banned for four years due to some doping violations. Zhang has also finished sixth in the final of Rio, and this time she was happy while receiving the gold medal on the Olympics podium. After that, she rushed to pick the large Chinese flag, which was near the pool deck. She wrapped the flag around herself and encircled Smith and Flickinger as they stood for pictures.
She said that she was new to the event in 2015 and knew nothing. In 2016 Rio, she wanted to come within the top three, but it was very tough for her. In 2015, several netizens said that she might be the butterfly queen, but all the expectations were not met. However, during last year she thought that it was time to take on the responsibility. Chinese people flocked to social media platforms for praising her, and local media appreciated her achievements. The state-backed media of China said that Zhang Yufei took the lead in the event. It praised that she has grabbed the gold medal despite the immense strength of her competitors from America.
